Tom Thornton

Tom is the most recent recruit to the Film Dept, joining in July 2017 as Film Team Coordinator.

After graduating in English and Film Studies from the University of Northumbria, Tom worked at the BBC for Newsround; a fantastic programme bringing news to life for young people. He then progressed to work for an education project based at Film Education, and on to work in partnership with a range of national organisations in the film education sector.  More recently, Tom has been working advising grantees and applicants on funding and project management at the National Foundation for Youth Music. Tom has also worked in freelance administrator and web design roles for a number of smaller creative and arts organisations.

Tom is an avid cinema goer, has volunteered at the BFI and Fringe! Film Festival and looks forward to both supporting and learning more about the scale and scope of the Film Team’s work at the British Council - as well as the filmmakers, partners and organisations we work with locally, nationally and globally.

Working at British Council since: 2017

Best thing about working on British Council Film Team: probably…. being able to talk about film-related things at work!

Favourite British film of all time: Hard to pick one but The Shining and Trainspotting stand out as a couple of favourites.

Favourite British film of 2016: Lady Macbeth
