The British director attends the fifth edition of iDocs Beijing, the first officially recognised independent documentary film festival in China.

British director Karen Guthrie presents her film The Closer We Get and she blogs about the experience here.

The Closer We Get is ‘a powerful and bittersweet portrait of loyalty, broken dreams and redemption told by its director, reluctantly-dutiful daughter.’ It premiered at HotDocs in Toronto last year, taking the Best International Feature Documentary prize, followed with a Best UK Feature prize at London’s Open City Docs.

Karen’s trip to China was supported by the British Council’s UK-China Connections Through Culture programme which offers offers support, information, advice, networking opportunities and development grants to artists and arts organisations in China and the UK.

The next round of Connections Through Culture grants, for visits between April and June 2017 opens on 2 January 2017, with a 3 February deadline.
