It’s here! #FiveFilms4Freedom kicks off today!
16th March - 26th March 2017
A suburban train station, London’s riverside and the streets of Paris form some of the backdrops to the stories being screened from today in #FiveFilms4Freedom, the world’s widest-reaching LGBT online short film programme.
Run by the British Council and the BFI (British Film Institute) for a third year, the 2017 programmme moves frm transgender parenting to machismo and sexuality to dating apps and beyond.
The five short films are available online and free of charge for audiences across the globe from NOW until 26 March.
The programme has been selected from, and coincides with, BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival, and builds to a single campaign day – Tuesday 21 March – when people everywhere are encouraged to watch the films in solidarity with LGBT communities in countries where freedom and equal rights are limited.
On 21 March, global audiences are encouraged to watch and share the films using the hashtag #FiveFilms4Freedom to recognise that love is a human right.
As a huge digital celebration of LGBT film, we’ll be reaching audiences from the Americas, China and India, to Europe, the Middle East and beyond. It’s a chance for audiences, wherever they are, to enjoy LGBT cinema and to find out more about emerging talented LGBT.
This is the third time out for FiveFilms and we're excited by the impact it has had to date; last year we reached 140 million people in 179 countries, with 1.5 million people watching one of the films over a 10 day period. In addition to the vast numbers, the programme was also successful - and surprising - in having significant impact in many countries where LGBT (and other human) rights are curtailed and in seven countries where LGBT lives are punishable by the death penalty.
This year for one year only, all five films are from the UK, by way of marking the 2017 anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality – a landmark moment for UK human rights (and also a reflection of the strongest crop of UK films in many years in the Flare line-up!).
You can find out more about #FiveFilms4Freedom here. Watch our trailer below - find out about the films we are championing and watch interviews with all of our filmmakers here - but most importantly, watch and please share the films themselves to help us remind the world that love is a human right!
(and you can watch them with Arabic, Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Spanish [Latin American] subtitles too).
