Shiraz heads to India
1st November 2017
As a highlight of UK/India 2017, the BFI-remastered Shiraz - an epic silent film telling the sweeping love story behind the making of the Taj Mahal - heads to India for a series of live shows accompanied by Anoushka Shankar.
As a major highlight of the UK/India 2017 year of culture, BFI's National Archive has remastered the India/UK/German co-production Shiraz and commissioned a new score from sitar master Anoushka Shankar. Franz Osten’s sumptuous Indian silent classic tells the sweeping love story of the 17th Century princess Mumtaz Mahal, and the subsequent construction of the Taj Mahal in her honour. An epic silent film featuring an all-Indian cast, produced by and starring Indian cinema pioneer Himanshu Rai, the remastered film had its world premiere as the Archive Gala of the recent BFI London Film Festival - and this week it's heading to India.
Grammy-nominated sitar player Anoushka Shankar will celebrate the majestic beauty of this film playing her new score live to accompany the Indian premiere of the film in Hyderabad before touring to Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.
