Berlinale 2019 is underway!

Bette Gordon's UK/US co-pro Variety screens in retrospective for the first time since 1983

7th February 2019

It’s going to be another busy Berlinale for the Brits, with films across the official selection, a celebration of the work of Charlotte Rampling, many sales titles at the European Film Market, and a UK delegation taking part in the Berlin Talents programme.

A strong selection of British productions and co-productions has been selected by the 67th Berlinale. Late last year British Council welcomed Berlinale programmers to London for our selector screenings programme and the results are on show alongside a selection of UK retrospective titles (some as part of the Panorama at 40 celebration programme) and a selection of Forum picks.

You can read details about all the films screening in Berlin across all sections of the programme this year, in our downloadable Berlinale 2019 catalogue..

British Council is a partner in the UK Film Centre again this year. We're at Stand 38 in the European Film Market’s Martin Gropius Bau, alongside partners including British Film Institute (BFI), the British Film Commission (BFC), Creative Scotland, Film Export UK, and Film London. Find out more at weareukfilm.com.

Of course, sales activity is another crucial part of British activity in Berlin, as dozens of UK-based film sales companies sell the next wave of buzzy titles. With change afoot in our position in Europe, we’ve partnered the BFI to co-host several targeted events designed both to share information and to champion a series of UK productions looking for international partners.

British Council Film, working with the BFI, is delighted to support short filmmaker Marco Alessi to go to Berlin via our Short Film Travel Grant Fund to screen his film Four Quartets, which not only screens as part of the Generation programme, but will also be competing for the Teddy Award for the top LGBTQ+ film. We're also is a founding partner of Berlinale Talents and we’re proud to support the 21 UK talents headed to Berlin this year (read more here).
