For a long time seen as the preserve of the small screen docs now have an international audience. The challenge for the UK is to take advantage of this renewed interest and demonstrate its considerable experience and expertise in the field. British Council Film promotes UK documentary makers through a number of partner relationships, particularly via The Grierson Awards. Established in 1972 to commend the best in British film and television documentary, the awards are given to outstanding productions with social or cultural significance. Each year British Council Film makes a selection of Grierson nominees and winners available to international partners at festivals, cultural centres and British Council partners.
