Feature Films
The British Council has a longstanding reputation for championing British feature filmmakers; over the years we have been instrumental in finding and nurturing talent as diverse and innovative as Mike Leigh, Peter Greenaway, Nick Park, David Mackenzie and Lynne Ramsay.
We work with international festivals and partner organisations to bring the best British feature films to audiences around the world.
To do this we maintain the British Films Directory - a vast online directory which details an exhaustive listing of both feature and short films. We track films in production, and invite filmmakers, producers and sales agents to enter their films as they move into pre-production. We also compile the annual BritFilms Catalogue - a condensed version of the Directory designed to give viewers a snapshot overview of the range of films completed in the UK each year.
Another important activity for profiling feature films is the preview service we provide for selectors from major international film festivals, such as Toronto, Venice, Locarno and Dinard. We organise screening rooms and liaise directly with sales agents and producers to line up new feature films to be viewed. International programmers trust us to do this because they know we are an independent body and not tied to any one studio or production company - we are 'honest brokers' enabling them to get a clear picture of new British features.
Finally we showcase the best recent British features by obtaining prints and speakers for international festivals and events (including seminars, masterclasses and workshops) throughout the world. We also occasionally mount our own British film events.
We do not fund feature film development or production - but we can help you get your feature film screened internationally.
