ICG Grants - meet the 2024 Film/Creative Tech Projects

As the latest round of International Collaboration Grants funding is announced, we're delighted to highlight six new cultural collaborations supported by the fund using Film and creative technologies.

AI and artists in film

Film London (UK), Fondation Liban Cinema (Lebanon)

Exploring AI technology through the co-production of two short films linking Lebanon and the UK. The project pairs emerging directors and producers from Lebanon with experienced scriptwriters, editors and composers from the UK, and dives headfirst into the conversation around AI as a tool for artistic expression, as opposed to a threat.

Breaking Borders

Scottish Documentary Institute (UK), DokuFest (Kosovo)

A residential lab designed to encourage creative collaboration between the UK and the Balkans and drive positive social change whilst pushing the boundaries of the documentary form. Eight emerging filmmakers from Kosovo and Scotland will take part in an intensive and immersive residency in Prizren, enjoying a combination of group workshops, industry-led sessions and mentorship. Participants will also get a chance to collaborate in teams to produce four short documentaries aimed for international distribution which will premiere at DokuFest 2025.

Rhythms of Resistance: Embodiment and Liberation

Intercultural Roots for Public Health (UK), Puma Camillê Producoes (Brazil)

An artistic survey of the many ways in which the performance aesthetics of resistance, offered by Capoeira and Vogue, function as rhythmic strategies of liberation for Black, LGBTQIAPN+ and other historically oppressed bodies. On and Offline provocations will culminate in the production of both a film and an original sonograph, together with an educational series and text anthologising the process.

Fungi and being in the dark

Filament Works CIC (UK), CAC Chiang Mai Art Conversation (Thailand)

An environmentally-themed collaborative exchange and creation project between artists inspired by mycelium - a fungus - in caves in two UNESCO Global Geoparks in the UK and Thailand. The project explores the fascinating world of fungi and the experience of darkness revealing the ecological and cultural connections that bind us globally. The project will culminate in contemporary installations and immersive performances for public audiences in both cultural venues and cave spaces while an accompanying digital concept album will reach audiences everywhere and document the project’s journey.

Future Femmes – XR Labs

4Pi Productions UK (UK), Matamba Film Labs Trust (Zimbabwe)

Building on previous research and development collaborations between 4Pi Productions in Cardiff and Matamba Film Labs in Harare, the project offers a unique artistic exchange, bringing together Welsh and Zimbabwean artists from various disciplines to create a 360° dance piece in partnership with Afrikera Dance Trust. The work will explore critical environmental issues facing Zimbabwe and provide valuable training opportunities for female creatives interested in immersive technologies. Once completed, the resulting XR piece will join the Dance Dome platform, a portable 360º cinema that merges movement, digital technology, and film, and will be shared online to global audiences.

Three Fields

Abandon Normal Devices (UK), Fak’ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival (South Africa)

A new international co-commission between Abandon Normal Devices (UK), Arts Catalyst (UK), Unbox Festival (IN) and Fak’ugesi Festival (ZA). This international cohort of partners and creatives will develop a web-based immersive and XR artwork, while pioneering sustainable digital production tools, documenting and setting a new precedent for environmentally conscious creative digital practices.
